Slow Cooker Honey Sesame Chicken

August 28, 2013 By Adell 29 Comments

Β

Looking for an easy dinner? This has you covered. I made this for our Sunday dinner last week and we really enjoyed it. And I loved how easy it was to make. You even cook the sauce right in the crock-pot. Less dishes to do = a happy mama πŸ™‚
Slow Cooker Honey Sesame Chicken

Print
Ingredients
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (I use frozen)
  • Β½-1 cup honey*
  • Β½ cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • ΒΌ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ΒΌ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 heaping tablespoon cornstarch
  • ⅓ cup water
  • Sesame seeds
Instructions
  1. Combine the honey, soy sauce, onion, ketchup, oil, garlic, pepper flakes & pepper in the slow cooker. Add the chicken and stir to cover them with the sauce.
  2. Cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or until the chicken is cooked.
  3. Remove the chicken from slow cooker, leaving sauce in the insert. Turn the heat to high on slow cooker.
  4. Whisk the cornstarch into water and pour into slow cooker. Whisk to combine with sauce. Replace lid and cook sauce on high 10 more minutes or until slightly thickened.
  5. Shred the chicken, return to the pot and toss with sauce before serving. Sprinkle with sesame seeds & sliced green onions (if desired) and serve over rice.
Notes
*I used Β½ cup honey like A Bountiful Kitchen, but you can use up to 1 cup if you like your asian dishes on the sweeter side.

Love the simplicity of this dish! Good, tangy flavor. The chicken was super tender. The whole family ate seconds!

Would it be a poor decision to cook this for 8 hours on low? I like my slow cooker to run while I'm at work.

I think that would be fine. If it has a setting to turn to warm after the timer goes off, that would be ideal but I don't think cooking it for longer on low is a problem. Let me know how it worked out for you!

Yep, 8 hours on low is a bad idea. The honey ended up burning and the chicken had the look of pulled BBQ chicken. I was able to save it by adding more honey and some ground ginger. I really need a crock pot with a timer :-/ .

Oh no! I am so sorry. But thanks for letting me know how it worked. I am glad you were able to save it at least. The timers are very handy for recipes that only cook for 3-4 hours because I too like to "fix it and forget it!" Thats what is so nice about crock pot recipes. Thanks for reading and I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!

I haven't tried it but I would suggest reheating it in a pot over the stove. If you use a microwave make sure not to heat too long. Chicken doesn't heat great in the microwave.

I'm cooking for 8 people, and I'd like to double this recipe. Will a 4 hour cook time still work?

I would probably plan on a little longer cooking time. Maybe 6 hours? I would check at 4 and go from there πŸ™‚

Well…I'm only posting this out of sheer honesty. Firstly, I love your blog but…not this recipe! I made this today and eh…I don't think I would do this one again! I did it exactly by the recipe to the tee but I think it was just kind of bland–I couldn't finish my plate. You can't win them all but…I'll try another one from your blog! πŸ™‚

I appreciate your honesty. I am sorry that you didn't enjoy this slow cooker dish. Maybe try with the whole cup of honey? (not sure if you did) But that would add a little more flavor. Hope you find something you like. Thanks for stopping by πŸ™‚

Did you add the cornstarch? You could try cooking the sauce not he stove with the cornstarch to thicken it up. Maybe it didn't get hot enough in the slow cooker? You could also add a little less water and see how that works/tastes. Hope that helps! Thanks for trying the recipe!

This looks yummy! Do you think I could double the recipe? If I wanted to add green beans when could I do so? I need to feed 6 adults and 3 babies

Yes, you could double the recipe. That should be enough food if you have a side of green beans as well. If you wanted to add green beans you could probably add them with the chicken but I have never tried that. You could also just steam them and serve them on the side as well. I have a great lemon and tomato green bean recipe on my site! Hope that helps!

Yes, depending on the size. I’d say 4 BS chicken breasts would be 1.5 to 2 pounds…
